Doncaster Sheffield sees cargo traffic double

Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield, geographically located in the center of the U.K., reported a 112 percent increase in cargo transported through its facilities, year over year, for 2014.

Showcasing its humanitarian effort, the airport, through operator Anglo World Cargo, made a series of flights to Sierra Leone to deliver much-needed supplies in the fight against Ebola.

The flights, operated by Air Cargo Global for the Department for International Development, carried and delivered beds, mattresses and medical supplies to five field hospitals in Sierra Leone.

Between October and December 2014, seven 747-400s operated from Robin Hood’s cargo terminal. The airport also has a large-enough runway to handle the massive Antonov An-225, the world’s largest plane.

Cargo manager for the airport, Dayle Hauxwell, said he was happy to help with the effort to help Sierra Leone defeat Ebola. He said the amount of freight being transported through Doncaster Sheffield is positive news for the airport and the U.K. economy.
